LANCHEZ Sand Filter Pump System for Above Ground Pool with 7-Way Valve

Pool Sand Filter Pump Guide: How to Set Up, Use & Maintain Your System

If you own an above ground pool, a sand filter pump is one of the best investments you can make for clean, clear water all summer long. In this guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know — from setup to seasonal maintenance.

What Is a Sand Filter Pump?

A sand filter pump is a two-in-one system that circulates your pool water while filtering out dirt, debris, and contaminants through a bed of sand. Unlike cartridge filters, sand filters are low-maintenance and can last for years with minimal upkeep.

How to Set Up Your Sand Filter Pump

  1. Choose the right location — Place the pump on a flat, stable surface near your pool. Keep it close enough for the hoses to reach without stretching.
  2. Add filter sand — Remove the top valve, add the correct amount of pool filter sand (check your model's manual), and replace the valve securely.
  3. Connect the hoses — Attach the intake hose to your pool's water return and the output hose to the pool inlet. Make sure all connections are tight.
  4. Set the valve to "Filter" mode — Your 7-way multiport valve has several settings. Always start on "Filter" for normal operation.
  5. Prime and start the pump — Fill the pump basket with water, then turn on the power. Check for leaks before leaving it running.

Understanding the 7-Way Valve Settings

  • Filter — Normal filtration, use daily
  • Backwash — Cleans the sand by reversing water flow
  • Rinse — Settles sand after backwashing
  • Recirculate — Bypasses filter, circulates water only
  • Waste — Drains water directly out
  • Closed — Shuts off all water flow
  • Winter — Winterizing the system

How Often Should You Run Your Pool Pump?

Run your sand filter pump 8–12 hours per day during swimming season. For best results, run it during the day when the pool is in use and UV rays are strongest.

How to Backwash Your Sand Filter

Backwash every 1–2 weeks, or when the pressure gauge reads 8–10 PSI above normal:

  1. Turn off the pump
  2. Set valve to Backwash
  3. Turn on the pump and run for 2–3 minutes until water runs clear
  4. Turn off the pump
  5. Set valve to Rinse and run for 30 seconds
  6. Return to Filter mode

When to Replace the Filter Sand

Pool filter sand lasts 3–5 years. Signs it needs replacing:

  • Water stays cloudy despite regular backwashing
  • Pressure stays high even after backwashing
  • Sand appears in the pool

Tips for Crystal Clear Pool Water

  • Test and balance your water chemistry weekly
  • Clean the pump strainer basket regularly
  • Run the pump consistently — don't skip days
  • Shock your pool every 1–2 weeks during peak season
